Will we print the NY Times in five years? I don’t care,

“Will we print the NY Times in five years? I don’t care,” says the NY Times publisher

Despite his personal fortune and impressive lineage, Arthur Sulzberger, owner, chairman and publisher of the most respected newspaper in the world, is a stressed man….Will it be free?
It will not, Sulzberger avers: if you want to read the New York Times online, you will have to pay.
In the age of bloggers, what is the future of online newspapers and the profession in general?
There are millions of bloggers out there and if the Times forgets who and what it is, it will lose the war, and rightly so, re Sulzberger. “We are curators,” he explains: curators of news. People don’t click onto the New York Times to read blogs: they want reliable news that they can trust.

The guys from papermint don’t wat to build up a second Second Life but a kind of. Not that realistic, but more in a comic style, colorful and 2D. They are in beta, testers can use the platform Mo-Fr 4 to 10 p.m.
I don’t really know if they can beat Second Life, maybe because they are more kids style, and merchandising is part of the busines plan. We will see.

Of course there a some Second Life Users from Germany. Arktis, a well know online-shop for Mac products and accessories, shows, how to use SL as a marketing palttform. They started two years ago a podcasts, a long time on the top podcasts ins Germany, and went now into the virtual world. Arktis set up Apfelland (Apple Land), and Island where people can meet and greet. Thats the way to get the community there. But there is also a (small) business model: The are offering a VIP-Package, wich includes T-Shirts and “some benefits” – which are not defined. You can also rent a appartment or watch events and shows.
Unfortunantly Linden has announced that SL will be off today, so I can not report from Apfelland before Thursday. Stay tuned…

Building a brand: Listen to Managing the grey

Managing the Gray #27 answers the question of “how do I build my brand?” It was asked from a personal branding point of view, but honestly I think the advice could work for the largest of companies as well. This was all generated from a question from David Jacobs and a lot of thinking about this lately on my part. Thanks again to Lee Hopkins for the station ID.

Rich media helps ads

Got this from the Video Insider Newsletter:

MarketNorms report certified that streaming video delivered nearly three times higher brand awareness and message association, and more than 100% higher purchase intent and online ad awareness than non-rich media ads. Small wonder that eMarketer said the category would grow to 71% last year, to $225 million.

I got information from major techcomnies they will spend a lot of money in producing videoclips as ads. Since the prices has fallen down, its not a moneydecision anymore. Its strategic.

How traditional media should use podcasts

Some thoughts for traditional media for a successful use of podcasts:

1. Tell your editors to think multimedia, not in print or radio or tv.

2. Think about the content: Is it audio really content?

3. Podcasts are not just mp3-fiels, podcasts are episodes.

4. Use a podcast not as a reading tool, but as a kind of window to the world (ok just for your ears…)

5. Be authentic: Don’t cheat, go to the places where you reporting from

6. Be open: Let the people say what they want to say. Editing isn’t always as good as it seems.

7. Be open II: Publish your podcast not only on your website, use podcastalley, iTunes, whatever.

8. Think about phonecasts, skypecasts and audiotours. Getting people involved is always much better then one man one voice.

Podcamp in Second Life

I was taking part at the Podcamp in Second Life last weekend. Wow, thanks to Podcast Pickle and Crayon for sponsoring this event. Because of the different times-zones it wasn’t easy to me (the sessions started when it was midnight here), but it was the right decision to stay.

I learnt a lot, for example about nisches: As I said many times in my german blog, we have to re-think communication from the masses to the cells, what I call it. Think like a fish swarm: You will swim around your river alone properly until you need help, more food or whatever. As a fish you know how to build up a swarm immediatly. We need to learn from the fishes how to connect together temporarly building up small networks and clusters to make things done and to work together. At the outer view we can build up a relevant size for advertisers and a large audience.
